  22.      This FTS (FidoNet(r) Technical Standard) specifies an optional
  23.      standard for the FidoNet community.  Implementation of the
  24.      protocols defined in this document is not mandatory,  but all
  25.      implementations of these protocols are expected to adhere to this
  26.      standard.  Distribution of this document is unlimited.

  32. MSGID
  33.  
  34.      A MSGID line consists of the string "^AMSGID:" (where ^A is a
  35.      control-A (hex 01) and the double-quotes are not part of the
  36.      string),  followed by a space,  the address of the originating
  37.      system,  and a serial number unique to that message on the
  38.      originating system,  i.e.:

  40.           ^AMSGID: origaddr serialno
  41.  
  42.      The originating address should be specified in a form that
  43.      constitutes a valid return address for the originating network.   
  44.      If the originating address is enclosed in double-quotes,  the
  45.      entire string between the beginning and ending double-quotes is 
  46.      considered to be the orginating address.  A double-quote character
  47.      within a quoted address is represented by by two consecutive
  48.      double-quote characters.  The serial number may be any eight
  49.      character hexadecimal number,  as long as it is unique - no two
  50.      messages from a given system may have the same serial number
  51.      within a three years.  The manner in which this serial number is
  52.      generated is left to the implementor.

  55. REPLY

  57.      A REPLY line consists of the string "^AREPLY:" (where ^A is a
  58.      control-A (hex 01) and the double-quotes are not part of the
  59.      string),  followed by a space, and the origaddr and serialno
  60.      fields of the MSGID line of the message to which this message is a
  61.      reply,  i.e.:

  63.         ^AREPLY: origaddr serialno
  64.  
  65.      The origaddr and serialno fields must be identical to the
  66.      corresponding fields in the MSGID of the message to which this
  67.      message is a reply.  A REPLY line is never generated in a 
  68.      message that is a reply to a message that does not contain a
  69.      MSGID line.

  74.      MSGID and REPLY lines should be placed before the text body of the
  75.      message in which they appear.

  77.      Finally,  a MSGID is generated only at the time of message
  78.      creation.  An existing MSGID and/or REPLY should never be stripped
  79.      from a message passing through an intermediate system.  No system
  80.      should ever add an MSGID and/or REPLY to,  or modify an existing
  81.      MSGID / REPLY contained in,  a message not originating on that
  82.      system.
